Window Tint Law

All vehicles registered in the state of Alabama must comply
with Alabama window tint law, Act 96-534, which was
effective August 15, 1996

Passenger Vehicles Multi-purpose Passenger Vehicles
Compliance Stickers Medical Waivers



Passenger Vehicles

Only the upper six inches of the front windshield may be tinted. All other windows
may have tinting that allows as least 32 percent light transmission, with a 3 percent tolerance for error. Reflective material may not reflect more than 20 percent of light.

Multi-purpose Passenger Vehicles

Windshield and front windows are subject to the same standards as passenger cars and
station wagons.On the windows BEHIND the driver, tinting is permitted.
Outside rear view mirrors on each side are required.

 

Compliance Stickers

All new tinting must carry a sticker of compliance which should be affixed to the vehicle window
by the tinting dealer. Cars with existing tinting that meets the standards also should
have a sticker of compliance, which may be affixed by a tinting dealer.

Medical Waivers

Exemption from the window tinting law may be granted for certain medical conditions.
Certification must be made by a licensed physician. For further details contact:
